When an alumina bed is unloaded, it is not unusual to find a layer of green oily substance at the top of the bed with the material getting progressively whiter towards the bottom. This occurs because the saturated top of the bed is acidic and produces RCL and green oils. These then pass through the lower virgin layers of the bed resulting in HCl transformation to RCl, no chloride removal, and green oil production.
Alumina-based adsorbents cannot remove RCL because the latter does not adsorb on the alumina support and it cannot react with the base metal inorganic promoter.
CLS designs and installs reactor specific absorbent systems that make no green oils or RCl.
Sudden changes in performance of Cl guards and S guards are an early indication of changes in reformer performance. Monitoring of Cl treaters and S guards is a tool for reformer monitoring. CLS provides its clients the ability for such monitoring.
To optimize Cl guard and S guard performance CLS construct a kinetic model unique to each reactor by plugging in bed dimensions, absorbent kinetic parameters and process conditions. This reactor specific kinetic modeling allows for predicting cycle length, equilibrium CL slip, mass transfer zone, pressure drop, and HCL — RCL ratios.
